Hog waste is part of hog production and is an unavoidable outcome in this process, although it is dirty and foul smelling and is a source of annoyance to people. Hog waste can be a source of air pollution in the area and also a source of toxins that can pollute the environment, but hog waste can also help people in some ways. For instance, generators that produce electricity are powered by methane gas produced from the contained hog waste. Many fertilizers that enrich soil for crops also are created using hog waste.

Hog waste used as fertilizers are liquefied and this liquid supplies the crops with much needed nutrients. Swine manure is composted and liquefied, making it easy to be applied and spread on the soil efficiently. This is often used in vegetable crops and is a good way to recycle hog waste nutrients in an environment friendly way. Composting is done first because this is the process that biologically breaks down organic matters found in the hog waste.

Hog waste also can produce synthetic crude oil, like waste excreted by other animals, and there is an ongoing scientific study to do this. In the U.S., there is a research study that breaks down the carbohydrate materials in the liquefied waste and turns these into synthetic crude oil, using heat and pressure. Scientists claim that the scientific project is still in its infancy stage but is with a bright future. The synthetic crude oil produced can be a good source of fuel while also help solve the problems of hog producers with their hog wastes.

There is also a process that can make hog waste produced as binding materials for asphalt. Binding materials are ultimately produced from this process, and the materials are less costly compared to petroleum based binders. The petroleum-based binder materials in asphalt are quite expensive, so using hog waste is a cheaper alternative that can lower the overall costs associated with road construction.

Management of hog waste is quite important because an error in management can cause serious complications. Waste lagoons and pits on the hog farm should be contained well because a small leak can lead to great havoc because this can pollute the groundwater in the local area. The treatment and efficient liquefying of the waste lagoons should be done in order to avoid the building up of solid waste matter, which causes excessive odors and foaming.

There is a natural agricultural waste product that helps hog producers reduce and solve these problems. This product is Agra Sphere or Lagoon Agra Sphere, and these use natural bacteria only that slowly eat away the solid waste formed. These are natural products that prevent sludge and crust formation and also eliminate foaming. Application of these products is easy because these are just tossed into the lagoons or waste pits and do not need mixing. These are also products that improve the nutrient value of the waste water.
