The most popluar types of Bike Trainers

A bike trainer is a piece of equipment that lets you train on your bike indoors.

Look for a strong and solid construction using a triangular frame set on a wide base. The trainer allows the cyclist to train in an upright position withoug any forward movement by inserting the rear tyre of the bike into the trainer lifting the tyre of the floor. With the rear tyre of the floor and the bike in an upright position the cyclist pedals the bike as usual.

The greatest benefit of the bike trainer is that as the days get shorter, as the weather becomes colder, of if the cyclist is unable to get outside to train, he simply connects his bike up to the trainer and is able to enjoy all the benefits of a normal training session.

There are a few different types of bike trainers such as, fluid treiner, magenetic trainer, as well as wind trainers.

Wind Bike Trainers

This trainer uses a fan to create the resistance. As the pedaling power of the cyclist increases so does the resistance. These trainers are generally at the lower end of the price scale.

Obviously the larger the fans the more resistance you get as compared to bike trainers with smaller fans. The wind trainer is the noisiest of all the trainers but does allow the cyclist to experience a ride similar to that of an outdoor ride.

Magnetic Bike Trainer

Magnetic trainers are quieter and as the name suggests, uses magnets to create resistance. Typically these trainers are mid level in quality, performance, and price.

Depending on the brand of trainer, you can adjust the level of resistance manually or electronically. The level of power applied to the pedals determine the level of resistance.

Low quality magnetic trainers have low quality magnets which will lose their attraction at a faster rate, which in turn reduces the level of resistance and when that happens the training experience for the cyclist is quite poor.

Fluid Bike Trainers

These trainers are smooth and quiet. They use an impeller with hydraulic fluids to create the resistance.

In comparison to the wind and magnetic trainers, these more expensive trainers use a hydraulic fluid, as the fluid heats up it thickens, the fluid when heated increases in viscosity and consequently increases the level of resistance.

More pedal power, more resistance. No need to worry about leaking fluid on the better brands, however the cheaper brands have been known to leak.

To sum it all up

For starters, you can ride any time of day, regardless of poor weather or dangerous conditions on the road.

No need to worry anymore about poor weather, or dangerous road conditions.

Your training can be more specific as you are in a controlled environment, there is no such thing as wind or rain or cold weather anymore.

As it is a more reliable and consistent training environment, it allows you to monitor your technique by removing such variables as wind and terrain differences.

Considerations for Choosing a Good Bike Trainer

Make sure the trainer can cater for different sized wheels, most avid cyclists own several types of bikes.

It needs to be compact, easy to store and built extremely solid.

I would suggest test driving all the different types of trainers as they all offer different levels of resistance, and as a rule of thumb the more expensive fluid trainers are the ones that offer the greatest range of resistance.
