Hypoallergenic Decor Doesn't Mean Sterile

Over the past 30 years we've made changes to our homes that have made them more comfortable, but also have increased our exposure to indoor allergens such as dust, mold, fungi and insects. Also, people in industrialized nations spend more than 90 percent of our time indoors. The good news is that creating a hypoallergenic home doesn't mean sacrificing either comfort or style in its decor.

No matter what you do you'll always have some type of dust in the home. It is hard to keep your house fully cleaned but you can contribute tremendously with just a bit of knowledge. Of course you really can't help with pet dander unless you're able to find hairless animals.

If you're able to reduce your humidity in your home to at least half for partial of each year you'll cut down on the dust, mold, and other yucky situations.

If you're able to use hypoallergenic fabrics and items which have cleaner lines rather than something which has ridged or such you'll eliminate any extra dust which can build up.

Casual, Contemporary, and Traditional are three styles which are possible when creating a hypoallergenic home. The reason for this is because of the design of straight lines and oversized furniture which will create fewer objects for dust to collect onto.

The first step in all three styles is to remove any wall-to-wall or fitted carpeting. Replace this with attractive flooring in any style appropriate to your theme and use area rugs give rooms a focal point. Choose a low-pile version such as an Oriental or D'Abuisson for a Traditional decor; any of dozens of vividly colored, sharply patterned Contemporary rugs for a bold decor; or a Transitional rug or even a Flokati (Greek sheepskin) for a Casual decor. In addition, runners and smaller area rugs are important accents for these decors, especially when they're made to be moved and easily cleaned.

Furniture is a big dust catcher. If you're able to purchase furniture which also slipcovers are able to be placed is a great idea. You'll be able to take on and off the slip covers to clean them and reduce the dust collection. Just because you'll use slip covers doesn't mean you won't be able to choose a great pattern such as plaid or floral.

If you are someone who collects specific items such as art or other knickknacks try placing them in a china cabinet. This will also give you less dusty items since all those little knickknacks would be a great dust catcher in the long run. Placing them in a cabinet which is closed will also give you style.

Children sometimes have horrible allergies so you'll have to create a hypoallergenic bedroom for them to rest their head. Wash all the surfaces as much as possible, especially the window treatments and linens for any dust particles.

Always remember no matter the little changes you do your allergies will be reduced.
