This coating can be easily scratched so use caution when cleaning your binocular lens by following these instructions. 10 is the power or magnification ability of the binoculars which translates to making the object you are viewing appear 10 times closer to than viewed with the naked eye. A power of 10 is an all around good number for general binocular use, especially if you are a first time buyer. 10 power is somewhat in the middle of the power range and is good for most all viewing. Objective lens size, or the second number in the model designation example mentioned above is 50. By doing this you will exert less pressure on the lens than when using your fingers on the cloth to press down on the lens.
Keeping your binoculars in their case with the lens covers 'on' until needed for viewing is the 'most' effective and recommended way of protection. If a cleaning solution is to be used, make sure it is recommended by the binocular manufacturer before using as some cleaners may discolor or dissolve the lens coating. Banging and or dropping can cause misalignment of the barrels (the two low power telescopes attached by a hinge) which in turn will result in a blurred or double image rendering your binoculars basically useless, unless you view through only one lens. Your binoculars are then only useful as a "monocular" and are no longer binoculars as you will not be able to see a clear image through both eyepieces at the same time.
Lens cleaning pens as found in camera stores are also a good way to clean the lens of your binoculars.
Banging or dropping can also result in cracking or breaking of your optic lenses. Standard size binoculars must be carried in hand, on the shoulder or around the neck by the safety/carrying strap and can have higher powers and larger objective lens sizes than compacts. Paper towels are made from wood and wood is abrasive. The biggest disadvantage to compact binoculars is that they normally don't have an objective lens size of more than 35mm.
Even so, banging and dropping can still cause misalignment so handle your binoculars with care at all times. Insure that your binocular case is clean inside and out before storing your binoculars in the case. Wipe and or blow any dirt from the inside of the case and clean the outside with a damp cloth.
When viewing, always put the safety strap over your head to prevent accidental dropping of your binoculars.
