How frequently as youngsters we thrilled to consider the unflinching bravery of Daniel as he was reduced into the lions ' den. It seemed that death was unavoidable and in moments he would be ripped limb from limb by those vicious beasts. He should never have been there and the king who authorized the casting of Daniel into the lions ' den, himself couldn't sleep that night; his conscience was troubled as he knew that faithful Daniel should never have been so treated. King Darius was very aware of the illustrious history of this notable man who had counselled forceful monarchs like Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar. He had heard of his wisdom and his ability to interpret dreams, and his exploits were well documented.

Order the wonderful story of Daniel in the lions den!

Due to his faithfulness to God and his fervent desire to please God in the alien culture of Babylon, the presidents and princes, who envied him and resented his devotion to the God of his pops, collaborated to have him punished for the blatant practice of his religion in Babylon. They made a decision that if any man made petition of any person or god other than king Darius for 30 days, he would be cast into the den of lions. Their cunning approach to the king and hypocritical flattery persuaded the king to make their suggestion an irrevocable decree and everything was now in place , whereby they could ensnare Daniel.

While passing his home one day, as they expected, they heard Daniel praying as he was in the custom of doing, with his windows open, in order that they could hear every word. No time was lost; their opportunity had come and they hurried to inform the king of Daniel's violation of the new decree. Faced with this information, the king had no option but to implement the law he had rubber-stamped and Daniel was detained and thrown into the lions ' den.

It was clear that Darius had misgivings as to his actions, as, just before seeing Daniel thrown into the den, the king said, "Thy God whom thou servest constantly, He is going to deliver thee." That was tiny comfort to Darius, who didn't know God as Daniel did and he retired to spend a restless night. Tumbling and turning on his bed, he finally arose, early the following morning and hurried to the lions ' den.

He was anxious to discover Daniel's fate and wasn't a small surprised, and thankful, when he discovered that Daniel was unharmed; God having protected him from injury of any kind. God had as usual rewarded faithfulness to Him and in seconds Daniel was let go from the den while the boys who had accused him were thrown into the lions, to be devoured by them.
