Charm jewellery is as popular today as it ever was. However, the significance of collecting charms to ear as jewellery has evolved over time. During WWI and WW2, soldiers would collect charms overseas as a present for their family members. The reasons behind this were sentimental and they were donned as a memento of their call of duty. The Nineteen fifties saw charm bracelets become the big craze with kids. They gathered charms to reflect specific events and special occasions that took place during their lives.

But the most current crop of charm bracelets seem to have been typically developed in Europe. In fact it is Denmark that has spawned this resurgence, thanks to home-grown jewellery maker Trollbeads. It was this company that re-launched charm jewellery as fashionable in the 1970's. As with most modern charm jewellery, these beads and charms were machined to go with a particular threaded system employed by that company. Danish jewellers Pandora use just such a copyrighted process. This means that their charms won't fit onto rival branded bracelets. Systems like these also guarantee that charms are fastened snugly onto their intended bracelet, where they can be added and removed with ease.

Furthermore, nearly all charm makers incorporate optional spacers or clips into their charm range.Clips are not threaded like charms, but maintain a hard and fast position on the bracelet. This serves to section off charms and keep them from jangling all over the bracelet. Other brand names who apply threading programs in their own bracelet construction include Aagaard, Links of London and Lovelinks.

Even though most charm manufacturers come from Europe, the concept of charm jewellery is becoming increasingly popular in North America and Australasia. The principal lure of these more sophisticated charm ranges is the overall flexibility they give the customer. The old fashioned chain links charm bracelet is still available, but this can only take a limited selection of dangling charms. The snake chain bracelet is the most popular charm bracelet now and is commonly available in gold and silver.

Furthermore the charms are made with many different resources and this can have a great effect on their eventual price. Traditionally charms, or beads as they are sometimes referred to, are created from sterling silver. However, there are now many made with murano glass, gemstones such as diamonds, and even wood.
