New York Criminal records are one of the documents that were made public in accordance to the Freedom of Information Act in which was established on 1968. The office of the state's Department of Criminal Justice Services houses all New York Criminal Records.

Criminal records in New York are used in a number of reasons. It is primarily accessed and used by the residents of the state to conduct a background check on a certain individual. People would check out the criminal history of the people they work with such as their neighbors, tutors, caretakers and even babysitters. By doing so they can be cautious about who they interact with daily. It is one of the documents used by authorities when conducting a criminal investigation. Sometimes it is the missing evidence that can help in resolve the criminal investigation.

A lot of information can be found on a criminal record. In New York, the state indicates the information of the convicted individual such as the complete name, address and date of birth. One can also find the physical description of the individual such as body markings like tattoo and scars. Relevant information such as details about the conviction, arrest, sentence and dispositions can also be found on the document. It also indicates other misdemeanors that the individual has done along with the names of the people who are involved with the incident.

Although criminal records are public documents, not all can access a certain file. One can access his/her own personal criminal file. Authorized persons such as enforcement agencies are also allowed to access the record of another individual. The individual requesting for the document is required to present two identification cards. A fee of $61.50 is needed in order to process the retrieval of the record. One can file the request through a mail order or a phone order. However, such methods take a loner time to retrieve the needed document.

The Department of Criminal Justice Services under the Criminal Identification unit manages the state's criminal records. It is also where the fingerprints of the convicted individuals are archived accordingly. One can also go to the state police department to get the information that you need. Now, the Internet is being used to store a lot of this information for public viewing.

The retrieval of the criminal record using the Internet proves to be a lot faster and convenient for most of the residents. One can do a free criminal records search but the results may not be helpful and useful than that of a paid search. The result of a paid search is more accurate thus it can be used right away even in court proceedings.
