Panic Attacks Information

Panic attacks are an irrational fear that comes in the form of an increased heart rate, an increased breathing pattern and chills or becoming sweaty. There are several other symptoms and although most are seen during a panic attack, individuals may vary as to the severity of each symptom and the symptoms themselves. They come on suddenly without warning due to an irrational fear that the individual might have. Although the triggers of individuals may be very different for each person, there are commonalities in their fear of the panic attack itself.

Victims commonly report that during a panic attack they fear that they are experiencing a heart attack or are about to experience one as a result of their other symptoms. The first episode of a panic attack is truly terrifying for most sufferers, since they rarely know what is happening. However, once an episode has passed, sufferers often dread the recurrence of panic attacks to a degree which may even be worse than the attack itself.

The first step in treatment is to gather panic attacks information which points the way towards useful therapies; behavioral therapy, prescription anti anxiety medications and relaxation methods can all be useful in helping sufferers to manage this condition. In behavioral therapy, the patient is encourage to relive some of the symptoms of a panic episode; through this, they learn that they need not fear the symptoms of their panic attacks. This is known as interoceptive exposure and consists of, for instance, a patient attempting to induce the kind of rapid heartbeat characteristic of a panic attack in order to demonstrate that experiencing this symptom does not necessarily mean that an attack is imminent. Behavioral therapy may also consist of exposing the patient to the stimulus which trigger their attacks in a controlled environment in order to desensitize them.

Relaxation techniques can be done in many different ways. The individual needs to first relax their shoulders when they feel a panic attack coming on. By being aware of the tension within the neck, the person can then learn how to relieve it. Relax the rest of the body's muscles to reach the goal of total body relaxation. An important step in relaxation is slowing down the person's breathing. Panic attacks usually bring on an increased heart rate and an increased breathing pattern. The person can blow out slowly through their mouth as if blowing out birthday candles in order to slow the breathing. An important thing for the person to remind themselves is that they are not going crazy and they are not going to die. It is these fears that further escalate a panic attack.

Anxiety is the root cause of panic disorders and there are different types of anxiety which can lead to this condition, as any reliable source of panic attacks information will tell you. There is PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), which is caused by a traumatic experience of some kind. OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is another type of anxiety disorder which can lead to panic attacks, It is characterized by obsessive thoughts which can bring on full blown panic as well as coping behaviors intended to allay these anxieties; panic can result when they are unable to perform these rituals.
