The Galapagos Islands are in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador in South America. The archipelago of volcanic islands played a major role in inspiring Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Technically, the islands form a province of Ecuador. The islands themselves and their surrounding waters are home to the Galapagos National Park and a biological marine reserve. While it is a good idea to pack lightly, there are a few useful items that you should pack in your suitcases when travelling to the Galapagos.

This close to the Equator, adequate protection from the sun is essential. Sun block, lip salve and Factor 15 sunscreen are essential. Also handy for sun protection is proper clothing. Pack a hat with a wide brim and a light scarf for neck protection. Loose cotton shirts and skirts/trousers help keep the sun's rays at bay.

You may want to find some time for snorkeling. Here, a 2mm-thick 'short' wet suit is all you will need. Pack a snorkel, of course, along with fins and a mask. These are available with prescription lenses if needed.

Children on holiday always increase your amount of baggage by several fold. As for clothing, you will need to bring rubber boots, swim suits that provide adequate sun cover as well as life jackets. Travel games, snacks, books and travel games all help to keep the nippers occupied when the going gets boring. If you are travelling with an infant, you will be able to find conveniently-packaged baby foods. These have the advantage of being unbreakable and add less weight. The food is premixed so you don't need to add boiled water.

There are no mandatory immunizations necessary, although you may want to get your tetanus and measles shots topped up. Hepatitis A and typhoid are also useful. If you plan to visit farms at the higher Andean elevations, you may want to consider getting an anti-rabies shot.

A yellow fever immunization will be required if you plan to visit Ecuador or Brazil. In fact, you will not even be allowed to board your plane to Brazil without this. Malaria is not an issue unless you are travelling to the mainland coast or the jungle.

If you or any of your fellow travelers need prescription drugs, take more than you are likely to require. This is in case your return flight is delayed for operational reasons, bad weather, civil unrest, etc. Make spare copies of your prescriptions in case you are questioned. Do not keep all of your supplies of drugs in one place. This is in case you lose a bag.

Naturally, when you are travelling to the Galapagos, you will want to capture the beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife in photographic form. Remember to bring along extra film, tapes or memory cards. Extra batteries and lens cleaner are also essential. If you are using film, remember to buy an x-ray proof bag to carry your film. A waterproof camera is handy if you go snorkeling.
