My older brother and I have always been very close and we normally listen to each other when one of us has something to say, and I am relieved that he listened to me when I mentioned to him that he might be showing some prostate cancer symptoms. He knew that something was wrong, but he assumed that it was probably just the trials of middle age, and his family, including his wife and teenage children, did not know enough about what prostate cancer was like, so they didn't consider it a possibility.
It was a good thing that we got together for lunch one day and he mentioned some of the physical troubles that he was having and I told him that he really ought to see a doctor and get screened for prostate cancer. At first, he brushed off my suggestion as he thought I was joking, but I told him that I was serious about the prostate cancer symptoms that he was displaying and he told me that he would set an appointment as soon as he got home.
Of course, I was nervous about whether he would really do it, so I called him the next day to see if he had made an appointment. He admitted that he had chickened out and hadn't made an appointment, so I hounded him relentlessly, until he gave in and promised me that he would make an appointment that same day.
A couple weeks later, after he had been to the doctor and gotten the results of his exam, he called me to let me know that I had been right and he was in the early stages of prostate cancer and would be beginning prostate cancer treatments soon. Although I was hoping that I would be wrong about his symptoms, I was relieved that the doctors had caught it early on, and I told him that I was completely there for him to support him however I could.
Of course the treatments were difficult for him, but with much encouragement from myself and the rest of his family, he got through them and his cancer did thankfully go into remission. Now that he is cured, he feels like he has a totally new perspective on life, and he came to me and graciously thanked me for persuading him to get screened and told me how grateful he was that I was educated enough about prostate cancer to be able to recognize the symptoms.
