Now that you have a dog you must learn the right way to teach your new family pet. The following information will give you the tools needed to give you the best learning experience that you can possibly pass on to your loved pooch.

When it is time to leash train your new dog or puppy, you must let him know that you are boss. Punishment does nothing but make him afraid of you and it doesn't actually correct the behavior. One thing that you should do, is make a short leash so that he has to stay right by your side. Do not let him lead you. You are the leader, not him.

Once your dog begins to master the commands you are giving him, change locations. Train him in a different room of the house, on your driveway, midway on your walk, in the park. Each new location offers new distractions. He might have trouble initially offering the behaviors, but soon he'll be able to ignore the distractions, and he will be able to focus more on listening to your commands.

Your dog should earn his freedom around your home. Too many pet owners give their dog free reign without earning it, which can lead to costly furniture replacement or even surgery when Fido eats something he shouldn't have. Test your dog's comfort levels and limits gradually, and in safe doses so you know his triggers.

Dogs should have a chance to exercise every day. The top mistake many dog owners make is giving their dogs inadequate exercise. The fact is that a hyperactive dog will have a hard time focusing, much like a child who has had many sweets. Exercise your dog thoroughly every day to maximize your success in training sessions.

Many behavior problems can be solved by additional exercise. If your dog is acting out, he may not be getting enough exercise. Try to walk your dog at least three times a day. If your dog is a working breed, at least one of those walks should be a run. A tired dog is often a well-behaved dog.

When training your dog, a great tip is to make sure you train your dog a certain amount of times for a certain lime limit depending upon its age because this is important to ensure your dog grows up to be well-mannered. For dogs that are under four months old, you should train them three times a day for five minutes each time. For dogs that are four to eight months old, you should train them two or three times per day for ten minutes each time. For dogs over eight months old, you should train them twice a day for fifteen minutes each time.

Use timing as part of your dog training methods. Use it as a form of communication with your dog. Timing is one of the main elements of teaching a canine properly. It doesn't matter what teaching methods you use, try to work at having them develop the proper timing for each method.

Your opinion on what truly means a dog is "trained," may differ from your neighbor, friends, or even dog training instructors. Whatever your beliefs, by training your dog to follow basic commands and to obey your instructions, you will create a happier, safer home for you, your pets, and other members of your family.
