If you are the owner of your business, then you are likely familiar with the threat of shoplifting. But are you aware of how much money is lost in businesses each year due to shoplifting? That figure may be as high as twenty five million dollars! This sends a clear message to business owners!

Even if you have not experienced theft yet, you have no reason to think that it can never happen to you. It can. One of the best things you can do is learn about the traits and characteristics of shoplifters. Spending time learning about this may make the difference between being the victim of crime or stopping it before it happens.

People who are about to shoplift may act and move certain ways. They may look guilty. Or they may move in strange ways, picking up items and putting them down in a distracted or absentminded way.

Another thing to watch out for is someone who keeps coming into your store, several times a day. If you notice this happening, watch out, because he may be planning the best way to rob you. He may be learning about your employees, where certain items are positioned and what time of day is ideal for stealing.

Here is something to try to protect yourself from shoplifting: have a designated dressing room worker. It is easy to steal things while in dressing rooms. You see, a person can hide things in their purses, bags or even in their own clothing.

Try this: buy some tags with different numbers on them. Hire an employee to work the dressing room, assigning each customer who wants to try on clothes a number that corresponds to the number of items she wants to try on. When the customer leaves the changing area, count the items to make sure it matches the number on the tag.
