While it might seem appealing to mimic what is most popular, the problem is that your project can stand the risk of being deemed a carbon copy and nothing more. If you have a creative idea that may not be familiar in mainstream gaming, do not be afraid to work off of the idea in question.
2. Game design is one of the few art forms in which science is necessary. This isn't to take away from the idea of creativity, since it is needed in order for the best games to rise to the surface. My argument, though - and I am sure that students in this field will be able to agree - is that computers are needed in order for these games to eventually be created. If such aspects as coding and rendering are not seen, games are unlikely to be created.
3. Keep up-to-date with the news in the gaming industry. This goes for just about any field of work but given the fact that the video game business is one of the most rapidly-changing realms of work out there, stories are likely to crop up at a moment's notice. As a result, you have to stay up-to-date. You have to understand what is current so that you may be able to tailor your projects better. The learning experience, as you can see, does not end once you attain your degree.
