Around four thousand years ago, the history of our island began. It was then that Amerindian peoples ?rst arrived from South America. Living off the sea and the land, they established farms and villages on Anguilla. In 1650, English settlers arrived and colonized Anguilla. They established plantations where corn and tobacco were grown. The settlement survived for six years until Indians from a neighboring island came and destroyed it.
Anguilla is a British colony and so the Union Jack has been present on the flag since the island was colonized and ruled by the English. The golden dolphins on white and a stripe of blue are meant to represent the spirit, as well as the wildlife of the island of Anguilla.
Initially, the light blue turquoise stripe at the base of the crest was intended to be the whole foundation of the crest, to show the turquoise shade of the Caribbean waters encompassing the island.
However, it became apparent that a solid blue background would increase the cost of producing the crest, so it was changed to a stripe of blue at the bottom, with a white background.
Local Anguillans are known to like their own local banner, rather than the banner highlighting the Union Jack. The local, informal banner essentially shows the dolphin crest in the center point of the banner, with no Union Jack. The official banner of the province highlighting both the Union Jack and the dolphin crest was first put into usage on May 20, 1990.
On the other hand, the banner that is perceived by England, the overseeing power on the island, is basically the British Union Jack, since Anguilla is in fact perceived as an abroad British region. The current banner is the fifth form the island has got since its initial one in 1957.
