Social media is all-the-rave now, with millions of individuals signing onto sites such as Facebook and Google+ each and every day. With the ever growing market it is especially important to create a social media strategy to appeal to individuals on these sites.

1. Hire an expert, not an intern

Yes, social media marketing is newer than most forms, but it's an alternative to television, magazine and other marketing options, with an infinite ability to grow. Because so much is available online, it is unwise to place an individual with little to no marketing experience in charge. Doing so may result in your business losing millions of pounds in revenue.

2. Brace for costs

Social networks are looking to make money, just like you, so they are going to charge you to put up your adds, run your features or display your information. It generally is not going to run as much as a magazine add or television commercial, but social media marketing is almost always going to cost something.

3. The Internet is ageless

The beauty of the Internet is age is relative to your mind. This means as long as you don't think you're too old for social media, you're not. It's important for everyone to stay in touch, including retired individuals and senior citizens. What better way to stay connected with grandkids than using social media. Because of this, business firms must use a social media strategy in order to reach older generations using Facebook and Twitter.

4. Don't Export Work

Foreign advertising firms are most likely going to charge you less for work, but they don't know your company or desired demographic. They are also prone more to mistakes, especially when English is not their native language.

5. Results...eventually

Building any kind of business, marketing platform or commercial income doesn't happen overnight. It takes time for people to see your marketing in action. This is due to a variety of factors, such as search engines listing the content, not to mention the learning curve your company goes through while designing the marketing strategy.

6. Play along with social media

You can find anything imaginable on the Internet. This means even if you think you have a very specialized product there are other individuals online that are interested in it. Social media helps those individuals find your products.

7. Abide by the rules

Sure, there isn't an exact guideline to social media, but like any other form of advertising, if you turn people off, they aren't coming back for more. Although you don't have to tip-toe around every subject, try not to directly backhand people and turn them off, because word of mouth spreads even faster than ever now.

8. Evolve

Social media doesn't cost an arm and a leg to produce or monitor, so the possible benefits and rewards from a well-developed marketing plan are endless.
