Understanding the Connection between Oral Health and Headaches

Millions of Americans suffer from debilitating migraines and headaches. They seem to come regularly and with intense pain at times, but there is little a person can do to make these headaches subside.

First, you want to make sure that you go see your dentist and your general physician. Make sure that you talk to them first about any procedures that they can do to be sure that you are able to get the sleep that you need at night.

However, bruxism has the opposite effect. When someone clenches their jaw or teeth, it only serves to make them feel more tense and agitated. Oftentimes, bruxism can lead to painful earaches and headaches. The pressure on the jaw is more than the jaw can handle, and so a headache ensues.

The first way that a dentist who specializes in headache remediation can help a person reduce or eliminate their headaches is by diagnosing if the person grinds or clinches their jaw while they sleep. Grinding one's teeth together or clinching the jaw together while sleeping often results in the person waking up with a headache or getting one later in the day.

As you are struggling with sleep apnea you should also not be drinking alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant and may only make the situation worse when you make it easier for your muscles to relax to far while you are sleeping and block your airway. When you are learning how you are going to manage your sleep apnea this does not mean that you have to stop drinking alcohol all together. You want to make sure that you are not drinking alcohol three to four hours before you go to bed.

If you or someone you love shows signs of some of these TMJ symptoms, then you should see a teeth and mouth specialist as soon as possible. It is important that you get help for these TMJ symptoms before they worsen.

But there are other ways that a dentist can help to relieve chronic headaches in people beyond fitting them with a night time mouth guard. Because often times the source of the headache is much more serious than grinding teeth.

While you are sleeping you will want to make sure that you can train yourself to sleep on your side. There are a lot of people that think that they will sleep on their back to help their back, but when you have sleep apnea you should sleep on your side.

This is why it is imperative that whoever is suffering from bruxism get treatment as soon as possible. Another treatment option is to wear a night guard at night. These night guards are similar to a plastic retainer that one wears on the teeth at night. The guard acts as a protector between your teeth so they are not damaged by grinding.

If persons who are struggling with chronic headaches have gone from doctor to doctor without finding relive, they should consider visiting with their dentist as they will be able to tell the person if their oral health is at the root cause of their headaches.
